IHSPA chose longtime Davenport North publications adviser Betty Christian for the 2023 Rod Vahl Teacher Award.
The Prize Patrol surprised Christian at a Davenport North faculty meeting. Kaitlin Haynes, Walsworth Yearbook Rep, arrived with flowers and balloons that Christian thought might be for the principal, but that seemed odd.
The award was a full-circle moment for Christian. Vahl, for whom the award is named, was her mentor. Vahl advised in the Davenport School District and served as an officer for IHSPA.
Haynes, whose son attend Davenport North, said while she cannot talk her son into joining the yearbook staff, he does stop in to see Christian. He knows her as the lady with doughnuts.
Christian is also the girls’ tennis coach. She loves her two-handed backhand.
Christian will be honored at the state conference Oct. 19.
