Two stories of the month that could not be more different. Evelyn Kraber of Iowa City West goes outside the school arena to cover an ICE raid in the community and the protest that followed. Kraber’s story includes an interview with the man’s partner. They localize the angle to include parents who had students graduate from West that were in attendance.
Evelyn Kraber is currently a senior at Iowa City West and is the Online Editor-in-Chief and Yearbook Managing Editor for the West Side Story. This marks Evelyn’s fifth story/photo of the month for IHSPA. This piece also earned Evelyn a Best of SNO award. You can read Evelyn’s full story here and more of their work here.

River Phillips of Ankeny showcases the Department of Agriculture’s reduction of chocolate milk availability for school lunch. The idea, which came under the Biden administration, hopes to reduce youngster sugar intake. You have to love quotes like this: “I had a cinnamon roll in my school lunch today, I don’t think chocolate milk is the problem,” stated senior Lilian Monthei. Notice the serious tone of the first, and the more light-hearted tone of the second. Both affective and appropriate.
River Phillips is currently a senior at Ankeny where they serve as the Co Web and News Editor for The Talon. This piece earned River a Best of SNO award. You can read River’s full story here and more of their work here.
